CRTD Facilities, Services and Joint Facilities
The Electron Microscopy-Facility
The EMF will offer basic transmission electron microscopy including planning of experiments, embedding, sectioning, pre- and postembedding immunolabelling, and help with the interpretation of ultrastructural data. The EMF will also offer scanning electron microscopy including critical-point-drying and sputter coating of samples. Training will be provided for the microscopes and for preparation equipment such as ultramicrotomes.
In addition to service and training, the EMF will establish correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM), build up an archive of resin embedded or frozen organs/tissues, and establish a database for experiments and images.

The Light Microscopy Facility
This facility provides researchers with high quality imaging systems along with strong support for the design of their experiments. It offers modern imaging techniques like stereomicroscopes, fluorescence video microscopes, structured illumination systems, point scanning confocal microscopes, multi beam scanning confocal, multi-photon microscope and TIRF.

The GMP-Facility (Good manufacturing practice)
Isolating mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) from human bone marrow and culture them without any animal supplements is the main service of the GMP Facility. In addition, allogeneic MSC are applied for the treatment of Graft versus Host Disease and autologous MSC will be used to revitalize human spongiosa for reconstruction of bone defects. Furthermore, the opportunity exists to freeze ovarian tissue biopsies for autologous transplantation before chemotherapy. Lastly, a cord blood banking (DKMS) and the human islets isolation program are located within the CRTD.

Histology Facility
The histology facility is situated on the ground floor in the BIOTEC building and is a joint facility between the CRTD, the BIOTEC and the Klinik für Unfallchirurgie. The facility offers equipment and advice for both cryosectioning and paraffin sectioning of tissues as well as for immunohistochemical procedures and histological staining methods. In addition, the histology facility is equipped with specialised equipment for sectioning bone.

The TILLING Facility (Targeting Local Lesions IN Genomes)
Its services are aiming at identifying point mutations in libraries containing large numbers of heavily mutagenized individuals of model organisms. It is a jointly operated facility between the MPI CBG and the CRTD and located at the MPI CBG. We are equipped with an automated pipetting station, a capillary DNA sequencer, and PCR cyclers. This setup allows the generation of about 4.5 million base pairs sequence information per week. Based on our experiences in zebrafish this capacity should result in the identification of about 15-20 presumptive knock-out mutations per year. Libraries of massively mutagenized zebrafish are currently available for screening.

Protein Purification and Antibody Production Facility
In order to provide tools and services at the CRTD for the generation of antibodies and recombinant proteins, a Protein Purification and Antibody Production facility is currently being established.
