Optoelectronics meets molecular biology

The interdisciplinary project "Laser System for Optogenetic Stimulation for Subcellular Investigation of Neuronal Networks" was launched at the TU Dresden, combining the advanced methods of optogenetics with precise real-time computer holography. The research work bundles the expertise of the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, represented by Prof. Jürgen Czarske (TU Dresden) and the research group of Dr. Volker Busskamp from the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) and is funded by the DFG with approx. 500,000 € for three years.

By combining optical systems with genetics, genetically modified cells can be controlled by light. The research results are of great importance for the investigation of neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, etc.).
