This year's "UniStem Day" took place on March 6, and about 70 students visited the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) of TU Dresden and enjoyed a deep dive into various aspects of stem cell research.

The UniStem Day connects scientists all over the world: 101 universities and research institutes in Australia, Austria, Colombia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands opened their labs to young scientists. Through lectures, debates, laboratory visits and games, students gain insight into the methods of stem cell research and the scientific working methods.

At the CRTD, the program started with a smartphone based stem cell quiz.  At noon the quiz was repeated – making the learning during the morning lectures visible. These focused on stem cells in eye and brain, mesenchymal stem cells as well as on aspects of stem cell transplantation. In the afternoon, the students could then choose between different stations: Exploring stem cell types in the lab with the help of pipettes and microscopes, gaining insights into cytometric methods and electron microscopy or discussing ethical issues in stem cell research - a colourful programme for curious minds.
