International PhD Program
The Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB) was awarded in 2006 together with the CRTD in the Initiative for Excellence of the Federal Government. About two thirds of the DIGS-BB faculty is also part of the CRTD network. In this way, research of the CRTD and teaching of the DIGS-BB are closely connected. In joint association with the International Max Planck Research School for Molecular Cell Biology and Bioengineering (IMPRS-MCBB), the DIGS-BB represents a faculty of more than 80 group leaders and offers International PhD Programs that provide outstanding opportunities for university graduates to work towards a PhD or MD/PhD with ambitious thesis projects in the following three interconnected research areas:
1. Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology (CellDevo Program)
The program offers research in a wide variety of experimental model systems and addresses questions of cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, neurobiology and bioinformatics. Students are provided with comprehensive research opportunities in molecular cell and developmental biology and training to place cellular processes into an organismic context.
2. Regenerative Medicine (RegMed Program)
Basic molecular and cellular research with translational and clinical studies will interconnect in this program, which addresses not only students of natural sciences who wish to enter medical research but also medical students who wish enhanced training in life sciences. Medical students may complete the program with up to two doctoral degrees, MD and PhD.
3. Nanobiotechnology, Biophysics and Bioengineering (NanoBio Program)
The aim of this program is to foster interdisciplinary research in cutting edge fields of nanosciences. The program is represented by faculty whose specific research areas include molecular biology, membrane biology, cell biophysics, single molecule techniques, micro- and nanofluidics, cell micro-manipulation, high-end imaging, nanophotonics, biomaterials, polymer science and nanotechnology.
All core group leaders of the CRTD train PhD students of the DIGS-BB every year and participate in the special training of the DIGS-BB. Nine core group leaders teach in the RegMedProgram and two in each of the other programs.
