During the last decade the focus of traditional biology and medicine has shifted to a stronger interconnection of the two disciplines particularly in view of the growing relevance of stem cell research for medicine. Dresden boasts world class research and scientists working together in the fields of molecular biology, regenerative therapies, bioengineering and biomaterials represented by the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden, the BIOTEChnology Center, the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, the Medical Theoretical Center, the Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine, and the Max Bergmann Center for Biomaterials. This identifies Dresden and the BIOTEC/CRTD as the ideal location and host of an international Master's program interconnecting traditional biology with clinical applications.

Accreditation
The Master's in Regenerative Biology and Medicine is successfully accredited via the TU Dresden system accreditation until September 30, 2018.

International Students

The Master's courses at the BIOTEC/CRTD are very international as you can see in the charts below for the years 2012-2014. We have students from all over the world, e.g. from Mexico, Brazil, India, Ghana, Russia, Ukraine, the USA, Italy, Spain, Turkey and Greece.

PhD Option

Through a cooperation between the Dresden International PhD program (DIPP) and the three Master‘s programs Molecular Bioengineering, Nanobiophysics and Regenerative Biology and Medicine, a Fast Track (following one year of study) or Early Admission (following 3 semesters of study) to DIPP is possible for selected students. Decision will be made based on performance and reference letters.

Fast track:
Outstanding students (a maximum of 6 students of all three Master`s programs) in the first year (2nd semester) will be invited to apply to the PhD program for a ‘fast track’. Admitted candidates enter the PhD program without completing the Master's degree.

Early admission:
Outstanding students (a maximum of 6 students of all three Master`s programs) in the second year (3rd semester) are invited to apply to the PhD program for an „early admission“. Admitted students may either directly enter the PhD program without completing the Master's degree or first complete the MSc, and then join the PhD program).

Teaching Staff

The major share of teaching in the Master's program is covered by the CRTD professors and their assistants. Their expertise is complemented by teachers from the Biotechnology Center (BIOTEC), the Medical Faculty Carl Gustav Carus (Med Fac), the Faculty of Mathematics and Science (Math Nat) and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG).

Career Prospects

The course will qualify students for work in life sciences. The students will acquire in depth knowledge of molecular, cellular and developmental biology with specific theoretical and practical application of in vitro and in vivo stem cell work relevant to regeneration and novel human therapeutic approaches. Students will be qualified to apply concepts and techniques in stem cell biology and animal models to new research projects in regenerative biology and medicine. Altogether, the students will be enabled to work independently on academic or industry projects in a problem-oriented and responsible way.

The students will have access to a wide range of R&D work fields, particularly in the areas of cell biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology and medicine, and have the opportunity to perform research in leading international research laboratories.

Curriculum and Modules

The Master's program offers interdisciplinary education in the field of stem cells, regeneration biology, tissue engineering, and clinically focused human biology and pathology with the aim of preparing students to perform research that can be applied to regenerative medicine therapies. The program combines theoretical training with extensive practical experience in the research laboratory with focus on the scientific fundamentals of stem cell biology and regeneration, model organisms, as well as recent methods of genomic analysis of stem cells and model organisms, tissue engineering, and current and potential applications in clinical diseases. Students will also learn and practice essential skills for presenting their work orally and in written form.
