TU Dresden

We, the researchers at the CRTD thank you for your interest in working with us. It is a great idea to gather first-hand experience in science. Scientist is a job like no other. It can be extremely rewarding. We are happy that you want to explore new frontiers with us.

School system and life and work at a research institute are not fully compatible, so in order to make your wish happen, there are a few things to consider.

Please familiarize yourself with the research groups listed at the CRTD website ( What would you like to see? Then contact the group leader directly. Explain in your informal application why you are interested in the group. Please be aware, however, that it is not always possible to accommodate your wish. The reason is usually not that we do not want to have students around but that it can be very difficult to integrate a student into the ongoing work program. So do not be disappointed if your plan does not work out.

For small groups of students in grades 7 to 11 who are interested in completing a placement, the CRTD also offers an internship programme. In a time period of 1-2 weeks, Participants get to know several departments within the institute in order to learn about their different activities and tasks. If you are interested in completing such an internship, please contact Judith del Mestre and inform her about the time period. The minimum number of participants is 5.

Other applicants (e.g. school leavers wishing to complete an internship prior to starting their university studies or apprenticeship; students interested in completing a mandatory or voluntary internship; students interested in completing their bachelor’s or master’s thesis at the CRTD) should contact the research groups directly. Please try to do so well in advance, because the available positions usually fill quickly.

Students who wish to do their BeLL (Besondere Lernleistung), Projektarbeit or similar should also contact the individual group leaders and discuss the options. Please note that you should normally be prepared to spend approximately 6 hours per week in the lab over a period of 6 months. However, if your school’s or project’s demands differ, there is some flexibility (e.g. the hours could be condensed to time blocks of 2 x 2 weeks during school holidays). Please discuss your individual case with the group you are interested in.

As the working language at the CRTD is English, please submit your applications in English. If you do not feel too comfortable about this, it nevertheless should not deter you: your internship might actually become a good opportunity to get exposed to an English-speaking environment and some free language training.
